Scabs and Bandaids

It's not the first and definitely won't be the last, but Brody just survived a good injury to his nose. We are not entirely sure how it happened but think that he woke up in his pack and play and lost his balance. When he lost his balance he did a face plant against the side and slid down, scraping his nose.

It didn't seem to bother him. He still played just as hard as he usually does. It started to heal nicely and formed a good scab. One morning when he woke up I noticed half of the scab was falling off. I tried to clip it off but Brody wouldn't let me. I was hoping to wait until he was in a more aggreeable mood but instead I made the situation worse.

As I was putting a shirt on him, Brody started to cry. I knew right away that I had pulled the scab off. (I should have known) I pulled the shirt over his head and saw blood dripping from his nose. I quickly tried to get a kleenex to stop the bleeding but he didn't want me to touch it. "Can I put a bandaid on?" I was trying anything to get him to put something on it. He was happy about the idea of a bandaid. (Well, we have a lot of bandaids which is why I have not yet purchased kid bandaids.) I grabbed an adult size bandaid and put it on his nose.

Brody had his bandaid on his nose for two days. (if you look closely you can see it in this picture) We even went to the doctor's office with it and got quite a few looks. It was certainly a funny sight.

It stopped the bleeding but it was an entirely different ordeal getting the bandaid off his nose. Now I know why kid bandaids are made for kids. And I think I will be getting a supply soon.

Checking out the animals.

Tractor Ride (the scar on his nose is explained in another post)

Sitting on the horse saddles.

We went to the Pumpkin Patch a few weeks ago. We had a fun time but I thought my boys were done with their colds, when in fact round 2 of our colds started that morning. I was the mother with a snotty nosed kid. (What kind of mother does that?) At least we were outside...right?

The boys still had fun and it was nice for me to get out since we ended up staying at home for the next few days.

Colt is always concerned about the things he sees.

Conversations with Brody

Last night Brody was in his bed reading a book. In the book was a picture of an astronaut on the moon with other space related stuff around it.

Brody: Mom, when I grow up, when I grow up I'm going to be an astronaut.

Me: Wow Brody, that would be cool. (I think it would be a cool profession).

Brody: Mom, can you buy me a spaceship?

Me: Yes, I would love to buy you a spaceship.

(then I started to think I shouldn't be saying yes to buying him all this stuff because he is going to start expecting me to buy stuff for him all the time and really where am I going to buy a spaceship)

Brody: Mommy, Mommy. Can you buy me one of these? (he's pointing to a picture of a moon probe; a device used to poke the surface of the moon to see what it's like)

Me: Well, Brody. If you are an astronaut then I think they will just give you one of those for being an astronaut.

Brody: Oh.

Hopefully he knows I won't buy him everything he wants...right? Sometimes it's tough being a mom. :)

Brad & Brody & Bedtime

Our bedtime routine usually involves a bath and then two little boys running around naked for a little while and then small wrestling matches between us (the parents) and them (the kids) while we put on their diapers and pajamas.

Once they are dressed we read a few books. Colt's attention span is very small so he lasts for about one page and then plays. Brody is pretty attentive for all of story time. Once our books are read we say our prayers. Again, Colt doesn't really pray with us and Brody is doing a better job every day of staying still and sitting down during prayers.

After prayers Brody gives Colt a hug and kiss and says "I love you" then he gives me a hug and kiss. I give him a big hug and kiss back and tell him to have a good night of sleep. Brad tries to get Colt to give him a hug and kiss but we are lucky to just get him away from playing.

I take Colt into his room and put him to sleep. I usually retreat to the office to check my e-mail etc. and Brad and Brody have their own special bedtime routine. It has grown from a special prayer and tuck in time to a much more involved process of going to sleep (in fact Brad was recently talking about how it is now a 20 minute prcoess to tuck Brody into bed.

According to Brad this is what they usually do. They read one more book together and this is always done with a lot of enthusiasm and special voices from Brad. After the book they do one jump into bed. It used to start right next to his bed, but now it starts down the hallway.

(Sorry the videos are so dark, but hopefully you get the idea)

After the jump to bed they do one timber.

Finally, Brad tucks Brody in with his Mr. Lamby, Mr. Hippo, Mr. Bear, and Mr. Turtle. I think a few more elephant friends have also joined him.

A weekend away

Brad and I know how lucky we are to have both of our parents living so close to us. This makes it especially convenient to plan weekend trips for just the two of us. This last weekend we took the opportunity to go out to Moclips, a beach cabin that we have been to twice before. The other times we have taken the boys (once with Colt still in my tummy). This time it was just us. We left Brody with Brad's parents (Fafa & Grammy) and left Colt with my parents (Papa Bob & Grandma Shari and also Aunt Jessie, Uncle Justin & Gunner).

After dropping the boys off we went to Brad's soccer game. I briefly contemplated the idea of playing but quickly decided against it...I'm just too big now. I did have fun seeing some soccer friends and watching some soccer, but it was way past my bedtime. After the game we went out to Red Robin and I was struggling to stay awake. The late night was followed by an early morning when Brad and I had to be at Interlake High School to meet his cross country team at 7 AM. They had a cross country invitational in Hoquiam. We spent most of the day at the meet. It was nice to actually enjoy a meet without chasing two little boys around. Once the meet was over we went out to the beach cabin. We spent most of the time there watching football, sleeping, reading, relaxing, I did a little scrapbooking, and walking on the beach. I was so lazy I didn't even take pictures.

Brody had tons of fun with Fafa & Grammy. As usual they spoiled him rotten, taking him to the pancake breakfast, on a fire truck and to the pumpkin patch. It's no wonder everytime he talks to them on the phone his first words are "Can I come to your house?"

Colt spent the weekend playing with his cousin Gunner. He followed him and tried to copy some of his antics. He also spent a lot of time watching football with the family. These pictures are from a visit to Aunt Jessie's friend's house. Candace has a little boy named Mack who is only a week younger than Colt (although much bigger). The boys had a fun time playing together.

Updated Walking Video

Colt is really starting to walk and run around the house. Here is the latest video. Please ignore the "tickle monster" in the background and Brody running across the screen.

Broken Camera

My camera is not working so I have no recent pictures, but I do have a cute story from today.

I know it's hard to imagine but sometimes Brody gets into trouble. Our main form of "discipline" is time-outs. After Brody has sat in time out for a few minutes I (or Brad) usually sit down with him to talk about what he did. (We are thankful he is good at talking because he can usually tell us what he did). Today he was standing up on the couch and he knows he can only be on his knees or sitting down. We've had this discussion before so I know he was just testing his limits again.

Our conversation...

Brody: I"m ready to talk.
Me: Ok, let's talk. Why are you in time out?
Brody: I was standing on the couch.
Me: Yes, and what is our rule?
Brody: Only sitting on the couch.
Me: Why?
Brody: We might fall down and get hurt.
Me: Yes, now can you say sorry to mommy for not listening to the rules? (We always have him apologize to the person he has hurt)
Brody: Sorry Mommy for not listening to you rules.
Me: Thank you.
Brody: I have to say sorry to the couch.
Me: Ok...

Brody walks over to the couch.

Sorry couch. (A little pause) That's ok.

And Brody continued playing.
