Black Sand Beach

Our next stop was at Punalu'u Beach which is a black sand beach on the Big Island.  I was skeptical of what a black sand beach would be like because I thought it would still have a mix of white sand.  But no it was a black sand beach.  It was a bit windy so we didn't get in the water but we did check out the turtles, both basking in the sun and playing in the water.

I'm not sure why Bo's eyes are closed.

South Point

After our time at the Old Kona Airport Beach we went into town to pick up some Hawaiian pizza. Ollie really wanted Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii. We went back to our house and spent the rest of the evening hanging out there. The next morning we had another enjoyable morning hanging out on the Lanai so it was hard to leave.

We then left to head over to Volcanoes National Park.

On our way there we stopped at South Point which is the Southern most point in the United States.  Even more southern than Florida.

While we were there we watched some people jump off the cliff.  The kids really wanted to do it but our bigger concern was battling the water swells to get back onto the rocks.  Brad and I aren't great swimmers so we wouldn't be able to rescue them.

We also watched this fisherman try to catch a Tuna.   He had one on his line but it got away.

Whale Sighting

While we were sitting on the beach Darby was complaining that she was bored....less than 30 seconds later she said "A Whale!" Sure enough she spotted a whale out in the water. Then we enjoyed watching it breach and travel down the coast line.

It's a little hard to see in the pictures but it is out there.

This was the first of many whale sightings we had on our trip.

Old Kona Airport

After getting some lunch we decided to check out a beach that was nearby called Old Kona Airport.  It wasn't a completely sandy beach but it did have some sand.  We spent some time playing catch with baseballs, softballs and footballs.

I spent some time reading.

Surfing

On Saturday we had a slow morning and we enjoyed taking in the view from our Lanai. One of our favorite things.
After our relaxing breakfast and coffee we got ready to go to our surfing lessons.  I guess my planning worked out well because we were a short drive to our surfing spot.

Unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures of us actually surfing but I can attest that we were all able to stand up a few times.   It was fun but also exhausting.  We have new respect for surfers who do this all the time.

Waiting to get our gear.

After surfing we went to a Shaka Tacoz which was recommended to us.
